Edinburg, May 13 – The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros drew 1-1 with Real Monarchs SLC. Real Monarchs pulled scored a on a Ricardo Velazco penalty shot. Mauro Manotas scored for the RGV FC Toros to bring the team even 1-1, his goal was his second for the Toros and the first home goal for the club.
It did not take long for the score line to change in the first half. After a controversial penalty kick was called, Real Monarchs’ Ricardo Velasco scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-0 in the 5th minute. The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros kept possession throughout the first half but struggled to find quality shots. In the 40th minute, Robert “TJ” Casner crossed the box into the box but Mauro Manotas was just inches away from connecting. Toros’ Sebastein Ibeagha connected a header in a set piece, but Real Monarchs’ goalkeeper, Lalo Fernandez saved it.
The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros started the second half searching for the equalizer. In the 49th minute, Jose Escalante was close to bringing the game to a draw, but Real Monarchs’ Fernandez blocked his thunderous shot. Rio Grande Valley’s Devin Perales had an amazing save in the 56th to deny Monarchs from doubling their lead. In the 57th, Mauro Manotas slipped the ball past the Monarchs’ goalkeeper after a Robert Casner cross to tie the game 1-1. Real Monarchs would lose a man after Danilo Acosta collected a second yellow. The Monarchs lost yet another man when Kevaughn Frater got his second yellow in the 84th minute.
The game was the second encounter between the two teams. The Toros had defeated Real Monarchs 1-0 with a Jose Escalante goal on April 23rd. The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros host Swope Park Rangers on May 21 at the UTRGV Soccer and Track Complex.
