The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (6-5-6) and OKC Energy FC (5-2-6) remained scoreless after playing a full 90 minutes at Taft Stadium.
OKC Energy was dominant in the early minutes of the game. OKC’s Danni Konig slipped through the Toros defense in the 10th minute, but his shot struck the post. As the first half went on, possession started evening out with both teams sharing the ball. The RGV FC Toros were once again forced to make an early substitution. Leo Ayala came into the pitch on the 30th minute for the injured George Malki. Kyle Muprhy had an opportunity at goal in the 42nd minute. The ball bounced to Murphy after Toros’ Jose “Memo” Rodriguez danced his way into the box into the box. Murphy’s volley went well wide.
The Toros sought to find its offensive rhythm in the second half through Rodriguez. Memo Rodriguez had an opportunity in the 52nd minute, but OKC’s goalkeeper, Cody Laurendi, punched out his laser of a shot. Three minutes later, Toros’ Eric Bird found his way behind Energy’s backline. Laurendi stepped up and also saved Bird’s shot. OKC Energy was awarded a penalty in the 71st minute after RGV’s Kevin Garcia committed a foul and received a red card. Toros’ goalkeeper, Callum Irving, dove to his right and saved Danni Konig’s shot. Energy was awarded a second penalty a few minutes after on the 75th minute mark. Danni Konig stepped up once again to take the shot, but he skied the ball this time. Christian Lucatero had a chance to put the Toros ahead in stoppage time. OKC’s Laurendi extended and made the one-handed save to keep the game even 0-0.
The Toros will host Tulsa Roughnecks on Sunday, July 10th. That game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. OKC energy FC will continue to face teams from the Lone Star State as they travel for a Saturday, July 9th match against San Antonio FC.
