The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros kept a clean sheet and the three points at home after defeating Orange County SC 2-0. Jose “Memo” Rodriguez and Aldo Quintanilla scored the two goals for the Toros.
Orange County SC had the first opportunity of the game. In the 5th minute, Thomas Enevoldsen’s shot sailed over the crossbar, which was defended tonight by Nico Corti. In the 8th minute, the Toros almost put one through Andre Rawls, goalkeeper of Orange County. Todd Wharton volleyed in a cross by Manny Padilla, but Wharton’s shot went straight to Rawls.
Rio Grande Valley kept knocking on Orange County’s front door. In the 29th minute Nicolas Perea tried his luck from outside the penalty box. His shot barely went wide to the left. The Toros finally got on the score sheet in the 36th minute. Memo Rodriguez capitalized on a Mac Steeves cross for his first goal of the season.
Orange County tried their best to break through the Toros’ defense in the second half but were unsuccessful. Corti denied Walker Hume from heading in a cross for a goal in the 65th minute.
The RGVFC Toros’ perseverance paid off the final minutes of action. Todd Wharton poked the ball away from Orange County and found Aldo Quintanilla. Quintanilla nutmegged an opponent and blasted his shot past Andre Rawls.
The Toros will face Reno 1868 FC next on Wednesday, May 2. That match will kickoff at 10:30a.m.
