EDINBURG, Texas (August 29, 2018)– The Rio Grande Valley FC (4-10-12) fall to San Antonio FC (10-9-7) in a 1-3 loss. SAFC take the third South Texas Derby in three years. Romilio Hernandez, midfielder for the Toros, made his debut with the RGV FC.
The Toros had a quick start when they scored the first goal in the third minute of the match. Midfielder Jesus Enriquez received the ball from midfielder Pablo Aguilar where he sent it to the bottom right corner from the center of the box where he marked his fifth goal of the season. Three minutes later, goalkeeper Nico Corti was challenged by SAFC midfielder Connor Presley when he shot from the left side of the box to the bottom left corner but Corti managed to save it. In the 22ndminute, forward Carlos Small sent a ball to Aguilar shooting from the center of box unfortunately, SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone, saved the shot from marking the second goal of the match. One minute after, Small had another chance to send the ball to the back of the net when he shot from the right side of the box but was blocked. SAFC fought to equalize in stoppage time where they had four shots attempted to goal but failed to equalize the game in the first halve.
SAFC turned the match around in the second half when Presley shot a left footed shot to the bottom left corner going past Corti in the 49thminute. Following right after, Presley had another attempt on goal but Corti saved the shot. In the 55thminute, the Toros had three attempts on goal by Aguilar, Small and midfielder Jorginho James but were blocked by the SAFC defending line. Two minutes later, forward Wilmer Cabrera had a lone shot but missed to the left side of the goal. In the 62ndminute, SAFC midfielder Lance Laing took a shot to the top center of the goal marking the second goal for SAFC. In the 67thminute, defender Omar Ontiveros headed a ball to Small where he shot from the left side but misses. In the 81stminute, SAFC Ever Guzman chips the ball over Corti sending the ball to the back of the net marking the third goal for the Alamo City club.
Hernandez debut with the club in the 82ndminute. Small led the team with four shots. The Rio Grande Valley will travel to Phoenix Rising FC on Wednesday, September 5 at 9 p.m. (CDT).
