EDINBURG, Texas (September 22, 2018) — Rio Grande Valley FC (5-13-11, 29 points) will face off against Seattle Sounders FC 2 (5-18-5, 28 points) at H-E-B Park on September 22 at 7:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The RGVFC are back at H-E-B Park after making a short trip to Colorado Springs to take on the Switchbacks FC. The match between the Toros and the Switchbacks resulted in a 1-1 draw, earning each team just one point. The lone scorer for the Toros was Midfielder Nicolas Perea in the 71st minute to equalize.
Prior to Tuesday’s evening practice, Perea spoke to us about his first goal this season; “It was a good buildup by the guys, we were able to hold possession for a little longer. Pablo and I had a nice wall pass, I was able to give it out to “Chuy”. Chuy had a great individual play. He was able to take two guys on and as he did, I found a little pocket that nobody was marking me. He was able to find me, and I just put it away.” Goalkeeper Michael Nelson had a stellar night, which included three key saves. The Toros were last at home on September 8 when they defeated then top ranked Real Monarchs FC 2-1.
Seattle Sounders FC 2 is entering this matchup following a 1-0 loss to Phoenix Rising FC. The loss snapped a five-game home win streak for the Sounders 2. Rising FC scored an early goal in the 16th minute and never looked back.
The last meeting between the two teams was on April 14 which went in favor for the Sounders 2. RGVFC was unable to pick up points on the road after the 2-3 loss at Cheney Stadium despite leading. Sounders 2 Forward Felix Chenkam with the locker room goal at just one minute of play set the tone for the match. RGVFC Head Coach Gerson Echeverry spoke on the upcoming match; “They are in a similar situation as us with some players, so I doubt that they will be bringing an older crew, so it will be similar as far as some youth players. I think it is going to be a very good battle, very technical team, very organized team. They try to play good soccer, so I think it’s going to be an enjoyable game and hopefully we are able to impose our will on them.”
Saturday’s match will be one of the last home games the Toros will have as the season winds down. UTRGV Mathematics & Science Academy will sponsor the night’s maracas giveaway and post-game fireworks.
