RENO, Nevada (September 26, 2018) – The Rio Grande Valley FC (6-12-13) falls to Reno 1868 FC (13-7-10) on the road with a 0-4 final. Goalkeeper Nico Corti had three saves tonight and Midfielder Matias Zaldivar led the team with three total shots and two shots on goal.
RGVFC kicked off the match with a shot from Defender Manny Padilla outside the box but missed to the right in the 9th minute. Corti was tested early in the game when Reno Defender Duke Lacroix sent a cross finding Midfielder Seth Casiple on the right side of the box who sent it to the far-left corner of the goal marking the first goal of the match in the 12th minute. Ten minutes later, Lacroix sent a cross inside the box to Midfielder Christopher Wehan who popped it to the back of the bottom right corner adding the 0-2 lead. Reno had another attempt in the 26th minute when the Toros conceded a corner allowing Reno to have a chance at goal. Reno Defender Zach Carroll headed the ball from the center of the block and fortunately for the Toros, the defending line blocked the third goal. Two minutes later, Corti sent a counterattack to Forward Monday Etim who shot over the crossbar. Corti had a big save when Forward Antoine Hoppenot sent a shot from outside the box to the top left corner.
Midfielder Jesus Enriquez came off the bench in the 45th minute immediately changing the momentum of the second half. Midfielder Pablo Aguilar had an attempt when he shot to the right corner but missed wide in the 48th minute. Two minutes later, Hoppenot sent a through ball to Lacroix who was found alone sending a shot straight to Corti. Enriquez sent a ball to Zaldivar where he shot from outside the box but unfortunately, it was saved by Reno Goalkeeper Matt Bersano in the 58th minute. The Toros had two back to back attempts at goal when both Enriquez and Zaldivar sent a shot missing out to the sides. Reno 1868 scored a goal in the 80th minute when Forward Brian Brown took a shot straight to Corti who deflected it to the back of the goal net conceding his third goal of the match. Three minutes later, Lacroix had an attempt, fortunately for the Toros, Defender Robert Castellanos blocked the shot. Reno ended the match with a late goal in the 89th minute when Forward Mohammed Thiaw took on the Toros defending line sending a shot through Corti marking the fourth goal of the match.
Castellanos led the Toros with three tackles, four clearances and one block. Defender Omar Ontiveros also led the Toros with four clearances, tied with Castellanos, and five interceptions.
As the season comes close to an end, the Toros will host the last home game of the 2018 season on Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. taking on Fresno FC. The giveaway will be a Mr. Toro bobblehead to the first 600 fans.
