EDINBURG, Texas (April 22, 2019) – Rio Grande Valley FC (2-3-2) hits the road to take on LA Galaxy ll (3-3-0) on Wednesday, April 24. Kickoff is scheduled at 9:30 p.m. CT.
There is no place like home, especially when you fight for seven points during a three-game homestand. The Toros clicked on offense in back-to-back wins, scoring a total of seven goals. The flood gates opened up at H-E-B Park on Saturday, April 20 as RGV FC flooded the Las Vegas goal. In the win, the Toros scored five total goals; four different players scored their first goal of the season, Wilmer A. Cabrera Jr. (PK) (15’), Isidro Martinez (19’), Maalique Foster (46’), and Carlos Small (85’).
Jamaican national, Foster, commented on the confidence that the team gets following a great offensive performance; “Always, it is always a confidence booster for the attackers and to our defenders because we are giving them something to defend for. So, it is always a boost for our coaching staff, our players. Everyone is really excited, and we are going to keep on working and stay focused.” The focus continues to make the Toros dangerous on both ends of the field as the combine a stout defense with a versatile offense.
Fresh legs might give the visiting RGV FC squad a bit of a disadvantage, but the players understand that a quick and efficient recovery is key to stay in the game. First-year player, Isidro Martinez gave us his take on the mentality going into this quick turnaround; “You try to recover as quickly as possible. Obviously, it is a short week this coming week so we just try to get as healthy as we can before the match, but we should be good.”
Head coach Gerson Echeverry provided his view on the upcoming match; “They are playing at home, so they haven’t traveled. We just played, we have to travel, but that is what happens and no excuses. We need to make sure that we have a bench, we might have to go to it.” Fatigue might play a role in the strategic layout but the confidence remains high as the Toros look to conquer their road task with prestige.
LA Galaxy ll has fallen three times this season and has conceded 15 goals. The Toros scored one-third of that mark in their last game so this might be another opportunity for Echeverry’s offense to shine. Los Dos sits in the ninth spot of the Western Conference Standings while the Toros have quickly risen to the 12th spot, making this a key matchup for both sides in order to continue working toward the top of the ranks.
