EDINBURG, Texas (July 20, 2019) – Rio Grande Valley FC (6-9-5, 23 pts.) defeat Sacramento Republic FC (8-8-2, 26 pts.), 2-1, on Saturday night at H-E-B Park. This marked the first-ever win against Sacramento Republic FC in franchise history.
The Toros kicked off the home match with a goal by Wilmer Cabrera in the 32nd minute, 1-0. The goal landed after a couple of knocks around inside the box. In the 84th minute, Sacramento equalizes with an own goal from RGV FC Isidro Martinez, 1-1. The Toros locked in the win in the 90th minute when following a corner, Carlos Small sent a cross inside the box to Kyle Adams. Adams then headered it past the keeper marking the 2-1 lead.
Nico Corti was tested early on in the game when Hayden Partain shot from the left side of the goal to the right but managed to miss. In the 13th minute, Small received a through ball by Kevin Rodriguez.
Small takes on goalkeeper Rafael Diaz then shot toward the goal but Matthew Mahoney saves the shot from going in. Two minutes later, Cabrera ripped the ball to the right but missed the opportunity.
The second half’s momentum changed when Small attacked in the 47th minute. He shot from the center of the box but sent it too high. Two minutes later, Camilo Monroy shot a right footed shot from the left side of the box but was saved in the center of the goal.
Sacramento snapped back when Juan Barahona shot from the left side of the box but sent it too high and wide to the right in the 57th minute. Hayden Partain followed with a right footed shot from outside the box but missed to the right. Tyler Blackwood had the last attempt in the sequence when he shot from the center of the box but sent it too high.
In the 62nd minute, Blackwood had another attempt when he took a left-footed shot from the center of the box but Corti managed to block it.
Monroy had an attempt in the 69th minute when he shot from the left side of the box but missed to the left. Following a cross from Martinez, Conor Donovan headed the ball from the center of the box but was blocked. Houston Dynamo loanee Sam Junqua had an opportunity in the 90th minute when headed the ball from the center of the box but missed to the left.
The Toros ended the night with 16 total shots, six on target. Sacramento Republic ended with 14 total shots, two on target. RGV FC won 50.5 percent of the duels encountered.
Cabrera led the squad with five total shots, two on target and a lone goal. In addition, he had a 94.1 percent passing accuracy, highest in the squad. Adams ended the night with one total shot, one on target, a lone goal.
Defensively, Adams totaled seven clearances, one block and tackle. Junqua led the Toros defense with eight clearances, four tackles. Corti totaled two saves for the night.
