AUSTIN, Texas (August 31, 2019) – Rio Grande Valley FC (7-11-7, 28 pts.) will make the quick road trip this weekend to face Austin Bold FC (10-9-6, 36 pts.) at Bold Stadium. The Copa Tejas matchup is set to kick off at 7:30 P.M. CST on ESPN+.
In their inaugural season, Austin has enjoyed a solid home record, 8-2-3 and has quickly impressed the rest of the league by placing themselves in the top spots of the Western Conference standings. Currently, they sit in the fourth spot, which would clinch them a playoff spot as a first-year team.
Despite hitting a road bump in their last match with a 2-4 loss to OKC Energy, the Bold remain powerful and have been trouble for opposing teams. The last meeting between RGV and Austin resulted in a road win for the Bold as they dropped the Toros 0-1 at H-E-B Park behind an Andre Lima goal.
Lima is the team’s leading scorer by a slim margin, totaling nine goals. The next most dangerous attacking piece is Kris Tyrpak who has sent seven shots into the back of the net for Austin this season.
On the defensive end for the Bold, goalkeeper Diego Restrepo has been able to lock in seven clean sheets on the season, which includes the 0-1 shutout of RGV FC in the last matchup on June 22.
If the Toros put together a full game, meaning that there is a balanced offensive effort combined with a solid defensive performance, they can upset Austin at home and climb the ladder in standings to inch closer to that desired playoff spot.
In the Copa Tejas standings, RGV FC would need to earn three points against the Bold on Sunday in order to take the cup home or vice versa. If the match ends in a draw, Austin would win the Copa Tejas due to a win against El Paso Locomotive.
