SACRAMENTO, California (September 13, 2019) – Rio Grande Valley FC (7-13-7, 28 pts.) hits the road to take on Sacramento Republic FC (12-11-4, 40 pts) at Papa Murphy’s Park. The Western Conference matchup is set to kick off at 4:00 P.M. CST on ESPN+.
As the season nears the end, the Toros remain hopeful at landing a playoff spot. This week they have an important road match against Sacramento Republic FC, who currently sits in the fourth spot of the playoff picture in the West.
The message is clear, score and don’t fall behind. Last match against Tulsa the Toros played an excellent first half on both ends of the ball but an early second-half goal spoiled the efforts, resulting in a tough 0-1 home loss.
When Sacramento and RGV met earlier this season, on July 20, RGV pulled off a 2-1 home victory. In that match, a late minute heroic goal by defender Kyle Adams sealed the three points for the Toros.
This time around there is a bigger obstacle in the way as far as fatigue is concerned. RGV FC has three matches in a span of a week so managing the pieces well will be crucial in this first match of three to come for Echeverry.
Offensively, Republic FC is led by Cameron Iwasa who has racked up 13 goals this season, closely followed by teammate Thomas Enevoldsen who has 10 of his own. The home-field advantage for Sacramento will play a big role and will test the discipline of the young Toros defense often.
Second-year defender Kyle Adams provided his take on the importance of discipline in the backline for the match; “It is about not making mistakes and backing each other up and staying compact. When your teammate does make a mistake, you help them out and bail them out on that one.” Last match against Sacramento, he was the hero as he stepped up on a set-piece, picking up the team on the offensive end.
The entire core is confident that they can get the job done and steal points on the road this weekend so look for a very well fought match to take place in California while the hope for a rise in the standings to earn a playoff spot remains high for RGV FC.
