SACRAMENTO, California (September 15, 2019) – Rio Grande Valley FC (7-14-7, 28 pts.) fall on the road to Sacramento Republic FC (13-11-4, 43 pts.), 2-1. Despite the loss, Nico Lemoine scored the quickest away goal for the Toros this 2019 season in the 5th minute.
Nearly 30 seconds into the match, Thomas Enevoldsen threatened the Toros goal when he sent a right footed shot from the center of the box to Houston Dynamo loanee, Michael Nelson, where Nelson saved the attempt at goal.
In the 5th minute, Jesus Enriquez sent a cross inside the box where Isidro Martinez headed the ball into the center of the goal, but goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth deflected out. Lemoine followed up after the deflection and buried it past Shuttleworth earning the 1-0 lead for RGV FC.
The Toros had two attempts back-to-back when Enriquez took a shot from outside the box but missed to the right side of the goal in the 12th minute. Dynamo loanee, Michael Salazar, then took a right footed shot from the left side of the box but also missed to the right.
Salazar had another attempt after he sent a curled ball from outside the box but sent it too high in the 16th minute. Two minutes later, Sam Werner took on Andrew Samuels and sent a shot from the right to the left side of the far post going past Nelson, 1-1, equalizing the match. After the equalizer, Sacramento kept the momentum and continued to threaten the Toros arc.
In the second half, Thomas Enevoldsen took a right footed shot from outside the box in the 55thminute but the attempt was saved in the bottom right corner. Sacramento Republic continued to attack RGV FC throughout the half.
After a bad giveaway by Nelson, the ball landed on Keven Aleman where he then sent it to Dariusz Formella. Formella capitalized on the opportunity and took a left footed shot from the left side of the box and sent it to the top center of the goal past Nelson, 1-2, in the 81st minute.
RGV FC ended the match with seven total shots, two on target and a 77.7 percent passing accuracy. Sacramento totaled 15 shots, four on target and 84.3 percent passing accuracy.
Nelson totaled two saves and a clearance this afternoon against the Republic FC. Martinez totaled four tackles, four interceptions and two clearances. He added one shot and one on target. Robert Castellanos totaled seven clearances and added two interceptions.
Dynamo loanee, Sam Junqua added three tackles, four clearances and one interception. Defender Kyle Adams completed 58 total passes with 86.2 percent passing accuracy. He also added two clearances and three interceptions.
Both Salazar and Enriquez ended the match with two total shots each. Enriquez contributed two key passes for the Toros.
RGV FC will continue on their road trip as they head to face Fresno FC on Wednesday, September 18. Kickoff will be at 9:30 p.m. CT. The match will be available on ESPN+.
