EDINBURG, Texas (Saturday, August 1, 2020) – After numerous delays due to inclement weather, Rio Grande Valley FC (0-4-2) fell 1-2 to FC Tulsa (1-0-2) on Saturday night at H-E-B Park. Robert Castellanos scored his first goal of the 2020 season.
FC Tulsa earned a lead in the 26th minute after Marlon Santos sent a left-footed shot to the back of the net following a corner kick, 0-1. In the 71st minute, Robert Coronado sent a long cross toward the inside the box, connecting with Castellanos who headed the ball sending it to the back-right post equalizing for the Toros 1-1.
In the 74th minute, Kyle Adams conceded a foul giving Tulsa a penalty shot. Ariel Martinez converted the penalty sending it to the bottom left corner, earning the lead again, 1-2.
In the 12th minute, Ariel Martinez sent a shot from the left side of the box, but Paul Blanchette managed to save the attempt in the bottom right corner. Seven minutes later, RGV FC defender Robert Coronado received a through ball from James Murphy where he sent a left-footed shot but unfortunately, the goalkeeper managed to save it.
Around the 42nd minute, lightning struck nearby which caused another weather delay. After a short halftime, Luka Prpa sent a shot from outside the box but was sent too high. The Toros struck again in the 62nd minute after Garrett McLaughlin drove the ball into the six-yard box sending a shot from the right side but was blocked by the keeper.
RGV FC totaled 11 shots, three on target while completing 84.6% of the passes and holding 60% possession. Tulsa totaled eight shots, four on target completing 76.7% of the passes.
Castellanos led the Toros with three total shots, one on target. Coronado totaled three clearances and two interceptions.
