EDINBURG, Texas (Saturday, August 22, 2020) – Despite putting two goals in back of the net, Rio Grande Valley FC (0-6-3) fell 2-3 to Austin Bold FC (3-2-2) on Saturday night at H-E-B Park. Juan Carlos Obregon Jr. scored his first goal of the 2020 season and Jonathan Jimenez scored his first professional goal tonight.
Austin opened the scoreboard in the 16th minute after Xavier Baez sent a long pass to Alasanne Ates Diouf. Diouf then lobbed it to Billy Forbes where he sent it to the back-right corner, 0-1. In the 21st minute, Diouf received the ball on the right side of the field, drove the ball into the box and took a direct shot to the back-left post, 0-2.
The Bold continued their goal-scoring in the second half after Ema Twumasi took on Carter Manley then sending a cross inside the box, connecting with Diouf. Diouf finished the play by sending it to the top of the goal, 0-3. RGV FC scored their first goal of the matchup in the 58th minute following a corner where Robert Coronado sent a cross from the left side to the right post. Obregon Jr. managed to connect, heading the ball to the back left of the post, 1-3.
In the 78th minute, Manley sent a long pass to the box where he connected with Jimenez. Jimenez headed the ball from the left side of the six-yard box to the bottom left corner past Diego Restrepo, 2-3.
The Toros tested Austin early in the 4th minute after Obregon Jr. sent a pass to Garrett McLaughlin. McLaughlin managed to send a cross inside the box, but no one was able to reach. One minute later, Robert Castellanos shut down the Bold’s attack as they attempted to take a shot from inside the box.
In the 10th minute, Austin threatened as Omar Ciss struck from outside the box but sent the ball to the top of the crossbar. Following a direct free kick, Ismaila Jome sent a left-footed shot but missed at the top right corner.
Obregon Jr. struck following a corner kick from the center of the box but sent it too high in the 40th minute. Right before heading to the locker room, Forbes was left alone but both Castellanos and Isidro Martinez shut down the threat.
The second half continued to be eventful for both sides. McLaughlin received a ball from Kyle Edwards where he sent a right footed shot from the center of the box but Restrepo managed to save the attempt. Before the final whistle of the match, Martinez took a right-footed direct kick from outside the box but was sent too high.
RGV totaled 11 shots, five on target while maintaining an 85.5% passing accuracy and 51.8% of possession. Austin totaled 13 shots, three on target with 80.5% passing accuracy and holding 48.2% of possession.
The Toros’ offense was led by Obregon Jr. as he totaled three shots, two on target while making 15 of his 16 passes successful and creating one chance.
Castellanos had a great defensive night totaling seven clearances, two interceptions, two blocks and one tackle. He also led with 77 total passes, giving him a 90.9% passing accuracy. Manley earned an assist tonight adding two interceptions, two blocks, two created chances and one tackle.
