EDINBURG, Texas (Friday, May 21, 2021) – For the first road trip of the 2021 campaign, Rio Grande Valley FC (3-0-0, 9 pts.) will visit El Paso Locomotive FC (0-0-1, 1 pts.) on Saturday, May 22. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. CST and will be live on ESPN+.
Last time both sides met was back in 2020 after the postponing of the regular season. RGV FC fell 1-0 to El Paso on the road, putting an all-time record between both squads to a 1-1-1. As a visitor the Toros have not been able to earn three points at Southwest University Park, yet.
RGV FC: For the first time in club history, the Toros have kept an undefeated record at a start of a season. RGV FC earned a 2-1 win over San Antonio FC on Sunday night, extending their winning streak to three. Tyler Deric was able to keep two consecutive clean sheets but conceded a goal by Santiago Patiño in the second half on Sunday. With the win, the Toros rank first in the Mountain Division – second team to have yet to tie or earn a loss, aside from Tampa Bay Rowdies (3-0-0). In addition, Rodrigo Lopez continues to be key in the Toros midfield as he has created nine chances throughout the three matches.
ELP: The Locomotive have played one match thus far that ended in a 1-1 draw against New Mexico United. Aaron Gomez leads the offensive efforts for El Paso with three total shots and an assist that resulted in a Leandro Carrijo goal. Defensively, Mechack Jerome leads with five clearances, two interceptions and one block and tackle. Logan Ketterer has totaled one save while having faced two shots, giving him a 50% save success rate. With Ketterer now on loan with Portland Timbers (MLS), the Locomotive will need to make adjustments at goal going into Saturday’s match.
