SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Saturday, May 29, 2021) – Rio Grande Valley FC (3-1-1) draw with San Antonio FC (2-1-2) 1-1 on Saturday night on the road. Tyler Deric ties his career-high of nine saves tonight – last time he totaled nine saves was in 2017.
SAFC gained the lead in the 40th minute after Marcus Epps sent a strike from the right side of the box to the bottom left corner past Tyler Deric, 1-0. RGV FC equalized after a play between Rodrigo Lopez and Adrian Diz Pe. Diz Pe headed the ball into the box giving Juan Carlos Azocar an opportunity to send a bicycle kick past Matt Cardone, 1-1.
The first half kicked off with an attacking RGV FC side but failed to capitalize on the opportunities. Rodrigo Lopez missed an opportunity in the 1st minute, with two back-to-back attempts by Baboucarr Njie and Christian Sorto followed Lopez. San Antonio gained dominance midway the first half while RGV was not able to keep it. On goal, though Deric conceded a goal in the first half, he accumulated six saves.
The second half kicked off with another save by Deric in the 47th minute after Christopher Lema struck the top left corner, forcing Deric to dive for a save. John Henry Sanchez took a left-footed shot from outside the box but missed to the right in the 52nd minute. Seven minutes later, Epps struck with a dangerous shot but was sent over the crossbar.
Deric was tested once again in the 64th minute after Emil Cuello took on RGV defending line and attempted to chip the ball over Deric but was saved by him. Wan Kuzain came off the bench and sent a left-footed shot from outside the box but missed out wide to the left of the goal in the 77th minute.
The Toros defensive efforts kept the matchup equalized as Diz Pe totaled eight clearances, four interceptions and three tackles, adding an assist. Camden Riley totaled six clearances with four interceptions. Adrian Vera also totaled five tackles, three interceptions and a lone clearance.
Njie led the offensive side with two total shots, two on target. Collectively, RGV FC totaled 10 shots, four on target while SAFC totaled 14 shots, 10 on target.
