EDINBURG, Texas (Wednesday, June 21, 2023) – Rio Grande Valley FC (3-5-7) defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (7-9-1) at H-E-B Park with the minimum of 1-0 to claim their first home win, in clean sheet fashion.
The opening half of the match was even on both ends, as both teams tested the respective back lines; Colorado Springs managed seven shots, none on target. Rio Grande was forced to make eight interceptions as the Switchbacks tested on both wings.
Frank Lopez received a pass just inside the 18-yard box, on the left end. He controlled and dribbled to center where he sent a rifling shot past Christian Herrera to score his second goal of the campaign, 1-0 at the 64-minute mark.
The middle third of the second half was a back and forth battle but Colorado were unable to find their danger strike, and fell victim to a sharp defensive line and a clear eyes Tyler Deric who kept a clean sheet at goal.
Wahab Ackwei cleared a danger shot in the dying minutes of the match to preserve the lead and help his side claim its first home win of the season, 1-0.
