Cabezas scores first of the season, Galindrez scores his second of the campaign as the duo play hero role on the night
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Saturday, August 12, 2023) – Rio Grande Valley FC (6-7-8) drew against at Louisville City FC (10-7-7) 2-1 on Saturday night on the road after answering twice while trailing to claim a 2-2 result heading into a quick turnaround on Wednesday against conference rival, San Antonio.
After a scoreless first 40 minutes of the match which saw both sides test each other at goal, Louisville City FC broke the deadlock via the foot of Dylan Mares who placed a finesse shot past a stretched Tyler Deric to make it 1-0 in favor of the home side at the 41st minute; Manny Perez received the assist credit for his ground pass through defensive traffic to set up the scoring opportunity for Mares.
Rio Grande Valley FC managed five shots in the opening half, landing one on target as they kept it competitive against a reluctant home side.
Juan David Cabezas hit paydirt on a set piece play as he headered in the corner kick pass from Wilmer Andres Cabrera to equalize the match at 1-1. Cabrera was credited with the assist on the action as the Toros climbed back into the battle at the 50th minute.
Joshua Wynder found a loose ball after a wild series inside the box resulted in a bounced ball off the left post; Wynder controlled and sent a powerful shot into the net as Tyler Deric was left with nothing to do on the rifling shot, 2-1 Louisville lead at the 72nd minute.
Minutes after checking into the match, Juan Galindrez tapped in a ball on a set piece play to equalize the match once again, this time at the 78th minute. The corner kick play drew the ball into the center of the box where a series of header touches by Cabezas and Ackwei redirected the ball to the far post, where Galindrez barreled in and tapped the ball in, 2-2.
Wahab Ackwei was issued a red card on a dead ball play for apparent misconduct, he will be ineligible for selection on Wednesday against San Antonio FC if the discipline stands review; Rio Grande were left with 10 men from the 96-minute mark on.
The late equalizer stood as enough for the visiting side as the Toros claimed a much-needed point ahead of an important derby match against San Antonio FC on Wednesday, August 16 at 8:00pm CST
