The midfielder scored his most important goal this campaign to send the Toros home with an important point
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Saturday, September 30, 2023) – Rio Grande Valley FC (9-10-12) is set to face fellow Western conference side, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (13-13-5) on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. CST. The match was played to an intense 1-1 draw as Mario Williams and Taylor Davila scored for their respective sides.
The opening half of the match saw both teams testing the wings and a pair of approaches down the middle that gave glimpses of a good defensive effort on both ends to keep the attacking side at bay.
RGV had a good opportunity in the late stage of the first half as Alex Monis found a loose ball near the box after a lazy defending error by Colorado Springs; Monis controlled and took a shot, but was denied as a sliding defender deflected the shot away from goal to end the danger.
Colorado Springs was awarded a penalty on a loose ball foul at the 65-minute mark, Jonathan Ricketts was sanctioned with the foul and a yellow card on the action as he pulled the attacking player away from the ball making enough for the referee to call a penalty in a crucial point in the match. On the ensuing try, Romario Williams put the ball away to give the Switchbacks the lead at the 68th minute.
Frank Lopez was issued a red card at the 83-minute mark after accumulating two yellows consecutively after arguing a call on the pitch; RGV FC were left with 10 men to close out the match and the Cuban striker will miss the upcoming match at Harford Athletic on suspension if it holds.
In added time, 98th minute, Taylor Davila scored what could arguably be the most important goal of the Toros’ season to equalize the match, 1-1 and send RGV FC home with a single point and the playoffs still within narrow reach as they head into the week with a game in hand and a meeting with Hartford Athletic, giving them yet one more chance to catapult over the line with a three point result.
