EDINBURG, Texas (Saturday, October 14, 2023) – Rio Grande Valley FC (10-11-13) hosted Eastern conference side Loudoun United FC (7-23-4) on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. CST in the 2023 season finale for both squads. RGV FC benefitted from an Ian Cerro goal and assist on the night to catapult past the opposition and claim a morale victory to close out the season.
Loudoun United scored a goal within 2-minutes of action as Wesley Leggett tapped in a ball past Carlos Merancio to claim the very early lead for the visiting side, 0-1.
Rio Grande totaled 10 shots, three on target at the 70th minute mark but were unable to break past Dane Jacomen, keeping the match in favor of Loudoun United. The visiting side were left with 10 men on the pitch after Houssou Landry accumulated back-back yellows at the 54th and 56th minute.
Alex Monis made things happen as he took a diving shot attempt inside the box at the 74th minute assisted by Ian Cerro who sent the short cross in the box to find his fellow attacker with space, equalizing the match at 1-1.
RGV FC gained the lead for the first time in the match at the 92nd minute as Juan Galindrez bounced one off the left post and Ian Cerro made a heads up play in the box to tap in the rebound to make it 2-1 in favor of the home side.
The second and final goal by the Toros was the deciding factor on the night at they locked in a home win in the season finale in front of their crowd.
