RIO GRANDE VALLEY FC TOROS KNOCKS DOWN TOP TEAM, REAL MONARCHS SLC

EDINBURG, Texas (September 8, 2018) The Rio Grande Valley FC (5-10-12) earned big win versus Real Monarchs SLC (17-9-2) in a 2-1 final knocking the Monarchs to second place. Forward Aldo Quintanilla led the team with seven shots.  

RGVFC kicked off the game with back-to-back shots from Quintanilla in the 3rd minute. Three minutes later, Forward Jesus Enriquez and Quintanilla had attempts at goal but unfortunately Monarchs Goalkeeper Jake Leeker blocked Enriquez shot in the 6th minute. In the 9th minute, Midfielder Pablo Aguilar sent a ball to Forward Carlos Small who took a shot from the right side of the box, but had it blocked by the Monarchs defensive line. In the 25th minute, Goalkeeper Tyler Deric was tested when Monarchs Defender Konrad Plewa sent a header to the top left corner, but Deric punched it out. Following the block, Quintanilla sent a ball to Small on the fast break and sent it to the right side of the box but missed to the right.  After Monarchs Midfielder Sebastian Saucedo took a shot from outside the box where Deric saved it in the top left corner, the Toros conceded a corner that Saucedo sent to Plewa heading it to the back of the net marking the first goal of the match. The Monarchs had the lead in the first halve of the match. 

The Monarch’s maintained possession as they entered the second halve. Although the Toros lacked possession, they had several attempts until landing the equalizer in the 71st minute. Defender Conor Donovan had an attempt that Leeker saved causing a corner. Midfielder Todd Wharton took the corner, sending the ball to Quintanilla and he took advantage of the close distance sending the ball to the top center of the net. RGVFC then regained their confidence after the equalizer.  

In the 76th minute, Monarchs Midfielder Justin Portillo committed a foul on Enriquez causing a free kick. Wharton took the kick from outside the box sending it to the bottom right corner establishing their lead on the Monarchs. The Toros had three attempts but failed to add more goals to the match. 

Rio Grande Valley FC will hit the road on September 15 going up against Colorado Spring Swtichbacks FC at 8 p.m. (CDT).
