EDINBURG, Texas (July 18, 2020) – Rio Grande Valley FC returns to H-E-B Park as they host San Antonio FC for a South Texas Derby. The matchup is set for Sunday, July 19 at 8:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcasted locally on Somos El Valle 5.2 and nationally on ESPN+.
Here are your four key points for this weekend:
RGV FC will reopen at home, but this time with no fans. As COVID-19 continues to spike in the Rio Grande Valley, H-E-B Park will play behind closed doors temporarily in order to keep the players, team staff, employees and most importantly, the fans safe. The club will continue to monitor the situation and remain in constant communication with local and state health officials in order to determine future viability to host fast at home matches.
The Toros faced El Paso Locomotive FC on July 11 where the team suffered a 1-0 loss. Although the matchup was drawn at the half, the Locomotive capitalized on an opportunity after Dylan Mares found the back of the net. Goalkeeper, Paul Blanchette, totaled five saves with 13 total shots faced.
SAFC had a bye-week as the USL Championship resumed play after four long months. They enter the matchup with a 1-0 win against Real Monarchs SLC in early March. Callum Montgomery was the lone scorer for San Antonio while Matt Cardone totaled two saves to assist with the clean sheet. Former Toros player and fan favorite, Jesus Enriquez is currently rostered under SAFC – along with defender Kai Greene. Enriquez was a dangerous and quick attacker for the Toros and is looking to continue to be a threat with SAFC.
Last time both teams met at H-E-B Park was on May 25, 2019 where the Toros boasted a 3-1 win – the first since 2017. Belize-native Michael Salazar Jr. earned his first brace with the club while tying the RGV FC single-season goal scoring record (7); Ruben Luna (2016) and Kyle Murphy (2017). Enriquez opened the scoring tab with a goal in the 30th minute after Robert Coronado was able to connect with him.
