EDINBURG, Texas (Friday, May 14, 2021) – Rio Grande Valley FC announced today it had added three players to the 2021 roster, signing midfield Josue Soto and acquiring forward Aitor López and defender Eduin Quero on loan from Deportivo La Guaira in Venezuela’s Primera Division. The signings are pending league and federation approval.  

Soto has made one appearance for RGV FC this season in the club’s home opener on May 1 against New Mexico United. He joins the Toros after spending two seasons with USL League One’s Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, where he made a total of 41 appearances, tallied one goal and five assists during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. 

Prior to Chattanooga, Soto spent two seasons (2017-2018) with AC Oulu, part of the Ykkonen League in Finland. He made 36 appearances while scoring three times and recording one assist. During the 2016 season, Soto made 18 appearances for FF Jaro, also part of Ykkonen. He scored two goals and made two assists. Soto started his soccer career in 2011 with Houston Dynamo FC as a Homegrown signing, at which point he was the third homegrown player in the Dynamo’s history. With Houston, Soto made appearances during friendlies and reserve matches before being loaned to San Antonio Scorpions in 2012. He returned to the Scorpions during the 2014 season where he made 26 appearances and played a key role to their championship. 

“Josue is a player with a lot of professional experience at all levels nationally and internationally in Europe and America,” said Wilmer Cabrera, Toros Head Coach and Sporting Director. “He is also connected with the valley and south Texas where he grew as a player.”  

López joins the Toros having most recently seen action with Atlético Venezuela, part of the Primera División in his home country. With Atlético, López made 10 appearances and totaled one goal in 351 minutes during the 2020 campaign. The forward was part of the Estudiantes de Caracas SC squad for two seasons 2018 and 2019 where he started in six of his 23 games appeared during the 2019 campaign. In 1703 minutes, López scored six goals and tallied one assist. In 2018, López scored two goals in 10 appearances with Estudiantes. 

The Venezuelan began his professional career early in 2016 with Deportivo La Guaira, where he made a total of 13 appearances and scored a lone goal in a 3-1 win over Estudiantes de Mérida at the age of 16 years during the 2016 season. López has also earned three national team caps with Venezuela’s U23 squad during the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament. 

“[López] is an attacking player with experience at the professional league and youth national team level,” said Cabrera. “He is looking to make a successful impact in this league and with the Toros for the 2021 campaign.” 

Quero spent a short spell in Portugal with Casa Pia AC from the Liga Portugal 2 during the 2020 season. Prior to Casa Pia, Quero spent most of his soccer career (2016-2019) with Deportivo Táchira from Primer División in his home country, Venezuela, and tallied one assist in 2017. In 2018, the left back made four appearances for Zulia FC, but returned to Táchira midway the season. 

The Venezuelan native has made a total of 10 appearances for the U20 squad, including three during the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup and six for the 2017 South American U20 Championship. Quero recorded an assist in a 7-0 win over Vanuatu on May 23, 2017 during the U20 World Cup, where Venezuela reached the Final before falling to England. 

“[Quero is a] professional player with experience in Copa Libertadores and World Cup tournament with Venezuela, where they reached second place in the 2017 U20 World Cup in South Korea with his country,” said Cabrera. “[He is a] defender with great attacking mentality and crafty left foot. 

With the addition of Soto, López and Quero, the Toros now have a total of 23 rostered players.

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week Presented by Cleer Audio for Week 3 of the 2021 regular season on Tuesday, with FC Tulsa’s Joaquin Rivas taking Player of the Week honors after scoring twice to lead his side past Indy Eleven for its third consecutive victory to start the campaign.

Now in his second stint in Tulsa, the El Salvador international reached a club milestone with his two goals against Indy on Saturday night, overtaking Sammy Ochoa for the most goals in club history with 21 for his career. Rivas now leads the early race for the Championship’s Golden Boot with four goals in his first three games of the season.

Rivas earned 72 percent of the ballot for his performance. Phoenix Rising FC’s Solomon Asante finished second on 17 percent as he scored twice in Rising FC’s 3-0 victory against Oakland Roots SC last Saturday night at Wild Horse Pass.

The Championship’s Player of the Week is selected by the USL National Media Panel, which is made up of representatives from each media market in the Championship.

GK – Tyler Deric, Rio Grande Valley FC: Deric posted a three-save shutout to keep the Toros in the game against San Diego Loyal SC last Thursday night before the hosts grabbed a late winner for their second win of the season.

D – Josh Drack, LA Galaxy II: Drack recorded his first professional assist in LA’s victory against Las Vegas Lights FC on Wednesday night, and for the week completed 77 of 96 passes, won 16 duels and made seven interceptions defensively.

D – Abdoulaye Cissoko, Tacoma Defiance: Cissoko earned the Defiance a point on Sunday evening with a beautiful penalty kick in a 1-1 draw at the LA Galaxy II, and also completed 39 of 45 passes and made three interceptions.

D – Forrest Lasso, Tampa Bay Rowdies: Lasso won 9 of 11 duels, made four interceptions and six clearances while completing 76 of 90 passes in Tampa Bay’s 3-0 victory against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday night.

D – Bradley Bourgeois, FC Tulsa: Bourgeois earned his second consecutive selection after recording an assist on Joaquin Rivas’ opening goal and winning 8 of 13 duels and 6 of 8 aerial duels and winning two tackles in his side’s win against Indy Eleven.

M – Ibrahim Bancé, Real Monarchs SLC: Bancé made a stellar debut for the Monarchs in the club’s 2-2 draw with San Antonio FC, scoring once while completing 31 of 41 passes, winning 8 of 11 duels and making 10 recoveries in midfield.

M – Corben Bone, Louisville City FC: Bone had an early assist on Patrick McMahon’s goal, notched two key passes overall and completed 62 of 70 passes, and won 4 of 4 duels while making 12 recoveries in LouCity’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham Legion FC.

M – Marcus Epps, San Antonio FC: Epps scored his first goal for SAFC and finished with four shots overall while winning 11 of 18 duels and 5 of 7 aerial duels and recording seven recoveries in his side’s 2-2 draw with Real Monarchs SLC.

F – Solomon Asante, Phoenix Rising FC: Asante recorded his first two goals of the season while recording two key passes, completing 26 of 33 passes overall and winning 6 of 7 duels in Phoenix’s win against Oakland Roots SC.

F – Joaquin Rivas, FC Tulsa: Rivas recorded his second two-goal outing of the campaign to lead Tulsa past Indy Eleven, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in the process, and had two key passes while completing 17 of 22 passes overall.

F – Steevan Dos Santos, Tampa Bay Rowdies: Dos Santos scored the opening goal of Tampa Bay’s 3-0 win against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, and also drew a penalty kick while winning 10 of 14 duels and recording four shots overall.

EDINBURG, Texas (Thursday, May 6, 2021) – Rio Grande Valley FC (2-0-0) earns 1-0 win over San Diego Loyal SC (0-2-0) on Thursday night at H-E-B Park. The nationally televised match gave the Toros the second consecutive win of the 2021 campaign – the best record to begin a season in club history. 

Veteran attacker Vicente Sanchez struck with a late goal off the bench in the 87th minute to lead the Toros 1-0 after Christian Sorto sent a cross inside the box, connecting with Sanchez. The midfielder then headed the ball to the bottom right corner sending it to the back of the net. 

The first half was kept 0-0 with both sides attacking. The Toros totaled five shots, two on target while San Diego totaled four shots, one on goal. RGV FC first threatened the goal in the 7th minute after Alexis Cerritos sent a cross inside the box, connecting with Elvis Amoh. The forward then struck the goal, but the shot was deflected out to corner. Two minutes later, Elijah Martin sent a shot to the left side of the box, but Tyler Deric managed to save it. 

Toros struck again in the 26th minute after Rodrigo Lopez connected with Sorto where he then sent a left-footed shot to the bottom right corner missing the effort. RGV FC had another threatening opportunity after defender Erik Pimentel sent a long direct shot from more than 35 yards out to the top center of the goal, forcing Muse to block it out giving the home team a corner. 

The second half continued to be threatening on both ends. In the 58th minute, San Diego struck after Charlie Adams sent a pass to Elijah Martin where he sent a right-footed shot from the left side of the box forcing Deric to block the attempt, sending it to a corner. SD Loyal threatened the Toros goal again after Tumi Moshobane sent a dangerous shot to the bottom right corner, forcing Deric to save the attempt and kept the clean sheet. 

Deric earned the second consecutive clean sheet of the 2021 campaign and had three saves. Defensively, Juan David Cabezas totaled four interceptions, 10 possessions gained, two tackles and tallied a shot. 

On the attacking side, Rodrigo Lopez totaled two shots, had five key passes and created five chances. Sorto had three key passes, one assist and created three chances. 

As a team the Toros totaled 11 shots tonight, three on target with an 83.7 passing accuracy rate while San Diego totaled seven shots, three on target and 82.0 passing accuracy rate.

RGV FC: The home opener victory gave the Toros the first-ever win in a season-opener. Forward Elvis Amoh opened the scoring tab for RGV in their new era. The goal came off an assist by returning midfielder James Murphy, allowing Amoh to send a shot to the back of the net. At the goal, Tyler Deric totaled two key saves that kept the first clean sheet of the season. The Toros look to continue their momentum and earn a win at home. 

SD Loyal: San Diego is led by former U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Landon Donovan as head coach. The matchup is the first time both sides meet. The squad kicked off their campaign with a 4-1 loss to Phoenix Rising FC, Ben Spencer being the lone scorer for SD Loyal. With the defeat, San Diego is looking to bounce back and earn a win on the road.

EDINBURG, Texas (Saturday, May 1, 2021) – Rio Grande Valley FC (1-0-0) earned first-ever win in a season opener tonight, against New Mexico United (0-1-0) at H-E-B Park. The 1-0 victory gives the Toros the first win against New Mexico in club history. 

During the second half, Toros midfielder James Murphy sent a pass to Elvis Amoh where he was able to take a quick turn and take a shot, sending it past the keeper to the bottom left-hand corner 1-0 in the 65th minute, marking his 10th career goal.  

The first half was dominated by the Toros as the squad held 53.8 percent possession. New Mexico had a total of five shots, while RGV FC’s goalkeeper Tyler Deric saved two of the shots on target. 

The first test for Deric was in the 15th minute as former RGV player Isidro Martinez took a shot straight to center goal, forcing Deric to save the shot. In the 30th minute, New Mexico had a dangerous opportunity inside the box but was controlled after a handball. Deric had an epic save in the 36th minute at the top of the box after Harry Swartz attempted a shot. The Toros forced keeper Alexandros Tabakis to deflect a shot out for a corner kick after Christian Sortotook a right-foot shot outside the box going into the half. 

New Mexico went into the second half holding 59.3 percent of the game possession, but the potent Toros attacking side took 10 total shots, three on target which led to the goal. 

In the 62nd minute, Alexis Cerritos took a left-footed shot but was deflected out to a corner kick. Eight minutes later, Wan Kuzain sent a left-footed shot from a set-piece to the top left corner of the goal but Tabakis was able to deflect it out. 

Uruguayan native Vicente Sanchez came off the bench in the 72nd minute and quickly made an impact on the pitch. Two minutes later, he drove the ball towards the box and sent a left-footed long pass to Sorto where he was able to send a one-touch shot to the top left corner over the crossbar. 

Before the final whistle, Baboucarr Njie sent a through ball to Sanchez where he was able to threaten New Mexico but the keeper was able to deflect it out of danger. 

The Toros finished the night with 12 total shots, four on target while winning 51.3 percent of the duels faced and having 74.0 passing accuracy rate. New Mexico United totaled 10 shots, two on target while having 78.3 passing accuracy rate. 

Kuzain led the squad with three total shots, one on target and a key pass. Amoh totaled two shots, along with Sorto and Sanchez. Grant Robinson had two key passes and led the defensive side with five tackles, four interceptions and a lone clearance. Juan David Cabezas totaled four clearances, two interceptions and a lone block.

“John is a player who brings the speed, flair and movement that excites the fans and makes difficult things look easy,” said Wilmer Cabrera, Toros Head Coach and Sporting Director. “He is very talented and hungry to make a positive impact in this league.”

Sánchez was previously with Asociación Deportivo Pasto, part of Liga DIMAYOR from Colombia. The Colombian native made three appearances and tallied a lone goal in a 2-1 win over Atlético FC during the Copa Águila tournament. 

Prior to Dep. Pasto, Sánchez played 29 matches for Leones FC from the Liga DIMAYOR II during the 2018 campaign. With Leones, the 25-year-old recorded four assists. In 2016-17, Sánchez competed in Honduras with Club Deportivo Olimpia both in domestic competition and in the Concacaf Champions League where he made two appearances. 

Sánchez began his professional career in 2014 with Atlético Nacional in Liga DIMAYOR I. He then had a short stint with Alianza Petrolera FC during the 2016 season.

ABOUT RIO GRANDE VALLEY FC

The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (RGV FC) enter their sixth season in the United Soccer League (USL) Championship in 2021. The club plays at H-E-B Park, a state-of-the-art soccer specific stadium that holds 9,700 people, the club trains in H-E-B Park’s world class training facility adjacent to the stadium. RGV FC is the only professional soccer team located within the Rio Grande Valley. In 2016, RGV FC became USL’s first team to develop a hybrid affiliation model with a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise. This partnership, with Houston Dynamo FC, began in 2016. The relationship has now evolved into a more traditional USL/MLS affiliation where RGV FC manages all aspects of the club and the Dynamo are able to loan players to the Toros for development purposes.
