The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros start the 2017 United Soccer League season on Sunday, March 26 against San Antonio FC. The game will kick off at 6p.m.
After losing against OKC Energy in the Western Conference quarterfinals, the Toros are hungry to make a deeper playoff push in this year’s season. Sunday’s game against San Antonio FC will be RGV’s first test in the club’s journey to reach the USL Championship game.
The Toros are currently undefeated against San Antonio FC, with a tally of three wins and one draw. On May 7, 2016 the Toros defeated SAFC 3-2 on the road with some last minute heroics from Rob Lovejoy in the first ever encounter between both clubs. The Toros returned two weeks later and played to a scoreless draw.
June 4 marked the first home game against San Antonio FC. After being delayed for an hour due to severe rain, both teams jumped onto the field to reignite the “South Texas Derby”. The Toros came up with the 1-0 win after Kevin Garcia scored on a corner kick.
With San Antonio’s playoff hopes on the line, RGV FC Toros and San Antonio finished the regular season with a game between the two in-state rivals. The Toros won that game by a score line of 3-0 and eliminated San Antonio from playoffs.
Rio Grande Valley FC Toros finished their preseason on Wednesday, March 22 with a game against Liga MX side, C.F. Monterrey. The Rayados came up on top by a score of 0-3. Dorlan Pabon opened up the score sheet with a powerful shot in the 18th minute. Arturo Gonzalez doubled Rayados’ lead in the first half. In the final minutes of the game, Celso Ortiz finished off the night with Monterrey’s final goal.
