The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros could not collect any points away from home as they fell 2-3 to Reno 1868 FC. The match marked the first time the RGV FC Toros conceded more than one goal in a match.
Reno’s Dane Kelly almost scored off a breakaway on the 8th minute. RGV goalkeeper Marco Carducci was able to thwart Kelly’s attack and send the ball out of bounds. Three minutes later, Kelly missed another opportunity after missing from the penalty shot. His shot went over the crossbar. The Toros went ahead when Jose “Memo” Rodriguez slotted in a rebound in the 20th minute. Jose Escalante crossed the ball over to Todd Wharton who tapped the ball into the goal. Andrew Tarbell, Reno’s goalkeeper, initially denied Wharton’s shot but the rebound found Memo’s foot and Memo scored his third goal of the season.
The Toros lead only lasted three minutes. Dane Kelly brought both teams even after he capitalized from a Antoine Hoppenot through ball. Joseph Holland was close to regaining the lead for the Toros in the 28th minute. Holland’s blast from a distance was saved by Tarbell’s diving effort. A minute later, Holland had another chance to score but his shot barely went wide.
Luis Felipe Fernandes gave Reno 1868 FC their first lead in the 66th minute. Jimmy Ockford had an important clearance minutes later, which kept Reno’s lead. Eric Bird tied the game in the 74th minute after scoring from the penalty spot.
Brent Richards scored Reno’s third goal in the 77th minute. The RGV FC Toros pushed for an equalizer in the last minutes of the game but could not concrete any opportunity. Marco Carducci denied Reno from scoring a fourth goal during stoppage time.
Rio Grande Valley returns home next Saturday, June 10. Seattle Sounders FC 2 comes to town. The match will kick off at 7:30p.m. at H-E-B Park.
