The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros had three different players score on the night as they defeated Seattle Sounders FC 2 3-1 at home. Jorginho James, Ruben Luna, and Ivan Magalhaes scored for the Toros.
The Toros were able to jump into the lead in the 16th minute. Robert “TJ” Casner could not get his header to go on target, but Jorginho James capitalized on the defensive blunder that followed the play. Seattle goalkeeper Tyler Miller passed the ball to his defense but Jorginho James intercepted the ball and shot a howler from a distance to put the Toros on top.
Toros’ Kyle Murphy tried his shot from a distance in the 34th minute but he could not get his shot on target. Seattle Sounders FC 2 found a late goal to send both teams even at the half. Riley Grant connected with a Ray Saari cross and headed the ball to the far post.
Rio Grande Valley kept finding spaces as the second half progressed. Jorginho James found TJ Casner on the left side of the pitch. Casner cut to the box and passed the ball for a Ruben Luna tap in goal in the 62nd minute. The Toros would score again just three minutes later. Emilio Garcia’s free kick found Ivan Magalhaes who kicked the ball in for the third goal of the match.
Seattle almost pulled one back in the 82nd minute. Charles Renken found himself with the ball inside the box. Renken could not find his way around Borja Angoitia, Toros’ goalkeeper, after he came out of his line. His shot would end up being blocked. Kyle Murphy almost notched a fourth goal for the Toros but was denied by Miller’s diving efforts.
Rio Grande Valley host Los Angeles Galaxy II next week on June 17. It will be the second time the Toros host Los Angeles this season. The previous match resulted in a 1-1 tie on May 20.
