The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros started the month of July with a 1-0 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1-0 with a Ruben Luna goal.
The match started 80 minutes later than scheduled due to a rain delay. The Toros controlled the tempo of the game throughout the first half. Switchbacks FC had an opportunity to get the first goal in the 31st minute. Kevaughn Frater shot a missile with his left foot that forced Borja Angoita to make a diving save. Both teams were scoreless in the first half.
In the 66th minute, a penalty was called after Colorado Springs’ Conner Bevans made contact with Ruben Luna inside the box. Luna stepped up to take the penalty himself and buried the ball inside the net to give the Toros the 1-0 lead. Switchbacks’ Eddy Prugh took a shot from outside of the box in the 74th minute, but RGV’s Angoitia held on the ball.
Switchbacks FC tried their best to find the equalizer in the dying minutes of the game. In the 81st minute, Conner Bevans’ header off a set piece barely missed the goal. Sean McFarlane had the last opportunity for Colorado Springs. His shot from right outside the box missed to the left of the goal.
The Toros will visit Swope Park Rangers next week on Saturday, July 8th. The match will take place at Children’s Mercy Victory Field at 7:30p.m.
