RGV FC Toros could not collect any points on the road as the club lost 2-0 to Phoenix Rising FC. Jason Johnson scored the first goal for Phoenix while Calle Brown had an own goal in the second half.
Kai Greene had the first shot on goal of the night. In the third minute, Greene headed in a corner kick straight to Josh Cohen, goalkeeper for Phoenix Rising. The game continued in a deadlock with both teams struggling to find any opportunities at goal.
Jason Johnson scored for Phoenix in the 34th minute. After Johnson appeared to go out of bounds, he cut to his left and found himself unmarked inside the penalty box. Johnson rifled in his shot past Calle Brown to put Rising FC ahead.
Calle Brown had a couple of great saves early in the second half to keep the Toros alive in the game. In the 56th minute, Didier Drogba passed the ball to Matthew Watson. Brown came out his line and blocked Watson’s shot. Johnson collected the rebound and laid it out to Drogba, who then sent in a curling shot. Brown was forced to dive to his left to deny Phoenix from scoring.
Phoenix doubled their lead in the 75th minute. Didier Drogba shot a curling free kick towards goal. The ball slipped out of Calle Brown’s grasp and rolled into his own net. Emilio Garcia almost pulled one back for the Toros via free kick in the 78th minute. However, his shot hit the crossbar. Shaun Wright-Phillips almost added to Phoenix’s lead in stoppage time. After dribbling past the RGV defense, his chip shot over Brown barely went wide to the left.
The RGV FC Toros will finish the season on the road against San Antonio FC on October 14. It will be the third match between the South Texas Derby teams with both teams winning a game apiece on the road.
