EDINBURG, Texas (Friday, Feb. 11, 2022) – The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros announced today the signing of midfielder Juan Pablo Torres to the 2022 USL Championship roster, pending league and federation approval.
Torres (5’4, 162) previously competed in the USL Championship with Copa Texas rival Austin Bold FC before becoming a free agent at the conclusion of the 2021 campaign. The 22-year-old joined Austin on a season-long loan from Major League Soccer’s New York City FC and started in 25 of his 28 appearances for Bold FC, scoring two goals. The midfielder provided defensive support with 18 tackles, six clearances and 16 interceptions, providing solid play for the side at both ends of the field.
Head Coach and Sporting Director Wilmer Cabrera spoke on the midfielder, noting his experience on the pitch; “Juan Pablo is a very talented player with experience playing in the USL Championship and also at the international level. We are happy to have his skills and quality in our team this season”.
At New York City FC, Torres recorded six appearances, three of which were in the Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup. Most notably, Torres recorded an assist in the 52nd minute to former teammate Keaton Parks in the Fourth Round against North Carolina FC during the 2019 tournament.
The experienced Lilburn, Georgia native has also seen minutes at the international youth level representing the United States Youth National Team at the U-15, U-16, U-18, and U-20 teams, totaling 18 caps combined through all competitions. His most recent international action saw Torres make seven appearances at the 2018 CONCACAF U-20 Championships where he netted four goals and two assists as the United States took the title, defeating Mexico 2-0 in the final.
RGV FC is set to open up the 2022 season on Saturday, March 12 when they host Oakland Roots SC at H-E-B Park in Edinburg,TX.
