RGVFC will face USL League One Club in first appearance in historic knockout tournament
EDINBURG, Texas (Monday, Feb. 28, 2022) – Rio Grande Valley FC will travel to face USL League One club North Carolina FC in the Second Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup following the announcement of the official draw on Friday, February 11 by U.S. Soccer. The matchup is set to take place at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. with the official date and kickoff set for Wednesday, April 6 at 6 p.m CST.
The 2022 edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup marks the first time the Toros will participate in the historic tournament, which will play its 103rd edition this year.
“We are very excited to compete for the first time in this club’s history in the U.S Open Cup,” said RGV FC Head Coach and Sporting Director Wilmer Cabrera. “It is the oldest tournament in North America, and we feel honored and proud to participate this year.”
As a head coach, Cabrera boasts plenty of experience in the tournament, having won the 2018 edition of the cup while directing Major League Soccer club Houston Dynamo FC. Toros alumnus Mauro Manotas scored twice in the Dynamo’s 3-0 victory to take the title against the Philadelphia Union in the Final that year.
“I have good memories about the tournament for sure and it is a dream to participate again with the Toros,” added Cabrera.
Cabrera has also found cup tournament success elsewhere in his coaching career. In 2019 he led Club de Foot Montral to victory in the Canadian Championship as the side defeated Toronto FC in a penalty shootout in the Final.
