EDINBURG, Texas (July 25, 2022) – Rio Grande Valley FC announced today a loan agreement with fellow USL Championship club Indy Eleven which sees midfielder Jonas Fjeldberg return to “The Valley”for the remainder of the 2022 USL Championship season. In a corresponding transaction, Indy Eleven receives defender Jesus Vazquez on loan for the remainder of the season, pending league and federation approval.
Fjeldberg (5-foot-10, 165) made eight appearances for the Toros during the 2021 season on loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati, and recorded three goals and two assists in 608 minutes of action to help RGV earn a place in the USL Championship Playoffs last fall.
The Norwegian had previously been selected in the Third Round of the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by FC Cincinnati. Last offseason, Fjeldberg signed with Indy and this season has recorded two goals in 16 appearances for the Eastern Conference side.
Prior to joining the professional ranks, Fjeldberg played collegiately at the University of Dayton for four seasons. While at Dayton, Fjeldberg made a total of 55 starts in 61 appearances and recorded 22 goals and 21 assists. As a sophomore, junior and senior, he led Dayton in goals and was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team in his junior and senior campaigns.
Vazquez (6-foot-1, 174) was signed by RGV FC on February 23 ahead of the 2022 campaign. A natural leadership presence earned Vazquez the team captain role in four early matches between March 20 and April 10 after proving to be a vocal and passionate piece on and off the field.
Vazquez has made 16 appearances for the Toros, starting on 11 occasions, and has logged 1,004 minutes of action. Defensively the center back has made 26 clearances and won 67 percent of his duels on the pitch, while also recording 10 interceptions and 12 tackles. Vazquez has also scored once for the Toros, notching a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw against New Mexico United at Isotopes Park on July 9.
Prior to his stint at RGV FC, Vazquez spent the 2020-21 seasons in the USL Championship with the LA Galaxy ll. The 26-year-old made 42 appearances for Los Dos, starting in all 15 of his 2021 appearances. In 3,645 minutes, he locked in an 82.4 percent passing accuracy rate while also notching 42 interceptions, 17 blocked shots and a 71.4 percent tackle success rate. Vazquez scored twice for the Galaxy ll, including a game-winner against San Diego Loyal SC.
