EDINBURG, Texas (October 22, 2022) – #6 Rio Grande Valley FC (14-14-7, 49 pts) battled it out in the Western Conference Quarterfinal matchup at Weidner Field with #3 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (18-13-4, 58 pts). The Switchbacks locked in a ticket to the Western Conference Semifinal behind a 3-0 home victory. The 2022 USL Championship Playoffs are presented by HISENSE.
Tyler Deric was shaken up on a hard foul from Elvis Amoh who closed in on a loose ball in the 18-yard box at the 28th minute. Amoh was issued a yellow for the foul and Deric exited the match due to concussion protocol, Colin Miller took over at goal.
Michee Ngalina challenged Colin Miller inside the box on a one versus one play, Miller made the block with his chest as he slid to make the save at the 47th minute, 0-0.
Colorado Springs Switchbacks managed to break the deadlock at the 84th minute; Jairo Henriquez controlled a ball inside the box and snuck left to tap the ball past Miller, 1-0. Triston Hodge received credit for an assist on the scoring play.
Aaron Wheeler put one away at the 90th minute as he received a crossing assist from Ngalina to make it 2-0 in favor of the Switchbacks.
Wheeler locked in a brace and a berth to the Western Conference Semifinal round for Colorado Springs, making it 3-0 at the 94-minute mark, before the final whistle. Steven Echeverria was given the assist on the final scoring play.
RGV FC close out the 2022 USL Championship campaign with a 14-14-7 record as their historic season came to an end at Weidner Field in the Western Conference Quarterfinal. The Toros are now 1-2-0 in USL Playoff action all-time.
